Background
Established in 1973, Horsham Regional Art Gallery is a relatively new regional art gallery of Victoria. It began as a one-room gallery within Horshams public library building, moved in 1983 to the former municipal offices and is now one of country Victoria's biggest and best galleries.
The 1930s Art Deco building provides elegant but intimate, spaces for the display of art work. In addition to the Mack Jost Collection, the Gallery also has a substantial collection of photography, with over 800 works by major Australian photographers. Another focus for the collection is art work with a regional connection through artist or subject matter.
The Gallery enjoys a close relationship to Horsham Rural City Council which currently provides over half its operating budget with the remainder provided by an annual grant from Arts Victoria.
Mack Jost AO
Horsham owes its fine gallery and collection largely due the long term support and encouragement of the late Mr Mack Jost AO.
Born in Horsham in 1918, Mack Jost was a world-renowned pianist. In 1981 his offer to bequest his collection to Horsham was the impetus for the transformation of the former Shire Offices to an art gallery. In 1995 he again launched with his donation a major Building Appeal. The Gallery was completely refurbished, creating 1/3 more hanging space, improved storage, a lift and sophisticated climate control, lighting and security systems throughout.
The Gallery staff and supporters mourned the death of Mr Jost on September 15, 2000.
