Loop showcases innovative contemporary video art by five of Australia’s leading artists; Daniel Crooks, Shaun Gladwell, Jess MacNeil, Arlo Mountford and Daniel von Sturmer. Testing the boundaries of this visual medium, the works in Loop present a spliced meditation on time, space, motion, place and perspective.

Curated by Daniel McOwan, the Director of Hamilton Art Gallery, Loop gives us the unique opportunity to engage with artists that have been given the great honour of representing Australia at the Venice Biennale. Loop includes 2007 representative Daniel von Sturmer, who uses everyday objects in his Screen Test series and allows us to view 2009 representative Shaun Gladwell’s outstanding video Storm Sequence, 2000, in which Gladwell executes a series of freestyle skateboard moves on the stormy foreshore of Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach. Loop also includes the work of Daniel Crooks, the recently announced winner of the Basil Sellers Art Prize.

Loop: new Australian video art is a National Exhibitions Touring Support (NETS) Victoria touring exhibition developed by Hamilton Art Gallery.

ink & watercolour on paper.
Collection Horsham Regional Art Gallery, gift of Bill and Maureen Mann, 1999

Captured from life, these sketches, from the Bill and Maureen Mann Collection of Wildlife Art, express the keen observational skill and draughtsmanship required to render our natural flora and fauna. Waiting, watching, hiding in the scrub, pencil at the ready. It is the desire to understand the habits, movements and physical structure of the subjects that can be found at the heart of these works. Through recording these multiple fleeting views and bringing them together this artist further our own understanding of the natural world.

DIRECTOR’S NEWS
Over the past few months the gallery has really buzzed with energy and activity. Much of this was caused by two very special exhibitions.

The opening of the Alex Lyall survey was highly emotionally charged. Alex was much loved and it was bitter sweet to see her work again but without her vital presence. Alex left one of these stunning works, the heart-wrenching Scrap Heap Bitch , and her partner, Anthony Briggs has generously donated its companion piece, bringing our holdings of Alex’s work to four.

The first viewing in Horsham of Marcus Wills’ spectacular Archibald Prize winning painting, The Paul Juraszek monolith… saw one of the largest crowds ever accommodated at the gallery. People are still coming from far and wide to see this mini-exhibition. We purchased one of the smaller paintings and Stuart Purves of Australian Galleries has donated another. Of course, we dream of one day owning the large painting, but currently it is not for sale

Our Annual General Meeting will be held at 7pm Thursday 4 September. We look forward to reporting the achievements of the past year to our members and the community and seeking feedback. This year our guest speaker is Graeme Russell, Council’s Venue Manager and a professional singer. Unlike most AGMs there are no elections, so the evening will be a pleasant sharing of information without threat of being “dobbed in” for a job! We would love to see you here.

The following Sunday from 2pm Art Decora’tea provides an opportunity to tour the buildings, celebrate the launch of Horsham’s Venues Review, and enjoy afternoon tea while listening to 1930s music presented by Graeme Russell and pianist Ross Bullock.
